SPACE Lab

4 November 2022 – 5 March 2023

SPACE Lab was a year-long project that presented an expanded field of experiments as artworks co-developed by artists with astronomers, artist-astronomer projects that question the notion that art were developed over 3 month period then exhibited at APT Gallery in London.

For scientific institutions or organisations, such collaborations are often perceived as “art in the service of science” where outcomes of art-science collaborations are primarily seen as a means to communicate difficult scientific concepts to the public. It is rare that art becomes an acknowledged, integral ingredient in producing scientific knowledge. (Kuchner, 2022)

I worked with Professor Rita Tojeiro at the University of St. Andrews to experiment with objects and data developed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey experiment. Professor Tojeiro helped me investigate the data using a code based tool I co-created with her. The exhibition involved a set of sculptures and cyanotype prints created using this digital tool. Each stage of the creation involved visits and conversations with Rita Tojeiro.
