PhD

13 October 2026

I have just started a PhD at the University of Manchester based at the Photon Science Institute.

The PhD came about through the project An Early Universe, working with the the Gravity Laboratory and ARTLab at Nottingham University. I began a process of collaboration with the team led by Professor Silke Weinfurtner and Dr. Ulrike Kuchner. The artwork An Early Universe subsequently led to my direct involvement on a similarly constructed experiment involving liquid helium; techniques explored in the art realm being transferred to the laboratory.

The Gravity Laboratory has now moved to the University of Manchester and I was asked to join them as a PhD candidate, I will be working across science and art, supported by supervisors in science, anthropology and art. At this stage I am still defining the PhD itself, however a core question is this: Can the encounter between artistic and scientific practice produce knowledge that neither discipline would have produced independently?
